Leadership 101: A Leadership Mentality
Leadership is not for everyone. It is only for those so deranged that they care for the goals of others before their own. That in a world filled with people who do not want to take responsibility for their own actions, leaders not only take responsibility for what they do but want the onus of other’s actions as well. If you are such a disturbed person that you go against the laws of nature and put other’s interest before your own I say, Welcome to Leadership 101.
Being a Leader is a concept that most misunderstand. Most believe that as a Leader your team is there to serve you when it is actually the other way around. The only reason a Leader exists is to serve their team. As a Leader you must set the tone and example for which your team will emulate. If you work hard, and give your team your best you have the right to expect that your team give you their best as well. If you show your team that you are genuinely interested in their individual goals, your team will rally to help you achieve the team goals. If you act with integrity in opportunities of ease and especially opportunities of difficulty your team will respect you and you have the right to expect that they act with integrity whether you are around or not. Now is being a leader easy? By all means no, but it is worth it. Seeing the impact that you can have on a person’s development is by far one of the most rewarding feelings you can have.
The measure of a Leader is not just in the goals they obtain but rather in their ultimate goal of putting themselves out of a job. To develop your team to such a level that one of your team members is able to step in as a Leader and take the team further beyond your original imagination. If developing your team to this level is not your ultimate goal then you are not acting with a Leadership Mentality but that of just a Manager. Now you may question why would I want to train someone to replace me? Which goes back to the original premise, that being a true Leader goes against nature’s law of self-preservation but being a developer of people, with the ability to create Leaders, you will NEVER be replaceable. As one of America’s most successful business tycoons, John D. Rockefeller said, “the ability to deal with people is as purchasable a commodity as sugar or coffee. And I will pay more for that ability than any other under the sun.”
Leadership is a responsibility; at this very moment you must decide what kind of Leader you want to be, the kind that puts the goals and development of others before your own goals. The kind that says “lets go do it” or the type that says “you go do it.” The choice is yours… Choose to Be Great!
